Super Street Fighter 4 pre-release Impressions - C. Viper

Posted by Blues Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Viper has come back to Super with minimal changes like most of the original cast. From what i've seen her EX knuckle has had its speed improved and that's about it. Her new Ultra, Burning Dance, is very flashy, It's activated in the air and starts with a diving kick into your opponents neck, if this connects Viper will ride her victims face like a snowboard, flips them into the air, catches them then flies up into the air and electrocutes them.

I was actually looking forward to something more from Viper as her bad matches still seem to be extremely lopsided, even with her new ultra I don't see this changing. I hope to see more from Capcom before the game is released as I'd like to see a way to fight back against the Zangief's of the world.

Super Street Fighter 4 pre-release Impressions - El Fuerte

Posted by Blues Sunday, January 31, 2010

No gameplay changes at all to note however his new Ultra opens up all new strategies to use.
El Fuerte Ultra Spark is quick slide into a grab, it has decent range and comes out in 3 frames. While not as fast as Zangief's Ultra it has the added bonus of being ranged, quick start up and can go under many moves and fireballs. His 1st ultra is not that bad and in my opinion is actually highly underrated as it works wonders for any fighters who are jumping in and out, I look forward to see how this Ultra changes the El Fuerte match, especially against his current bad match ups.

Super Street Fighter 4 pre-release Impressions - Zangief

Posted by Blues Saturday, January 30, 2010

Zangief like the rest of the original cast seems to have negligible changes from Street Fighter 4. His Lariat reportedly does less damage....and that's about it as far as the bad things concerning Gief are concerned, so expect the Red Cyclone to be just as powerful as you remember him, even more so when you see what his new ultra can do.

The Siberian Blizzard is his new air Ultra and as you can see in the video below it looks just as crazy as his original did. Now unlike the Ultimate Atomic Buster this move is a total game changer. Now longer will Blanka Balls and Tiger Knees keep you at bay as the SB can grab any move that even put your character slightly airborne. Timing it right can totally change the game in your favour as the move does incredible damage just like the UAB.

Now apparently this move can also be landed if a lariat is FADC'ed or trade hits against, I have not seen this but if this is true, expect Gief to be even more hated this time around!

Super Street Fighter 4 pre-release Impressions - M.Bison

Posted by Blues Tuesday, January 26, 2010

From the limited information that I've been able to take in and from chatting with a few people who played him, Bison has not undergone that many changes at all.

His new Ultra, Psycho Punisher, is absolutely brutal though. It seems to land similar to El Fuerte's Ultra 1, Bison does a low head stomp and lands right in front of them, grabs their face, picks them up and plunges his fist right into his victims stomach then blasts them full of psycho power. Even with all of his short falls and always having the feeling of fighting an uphill battle, Bison was my main in the original SF4 mainly because I loved the (limited as I could hit it) ending a round with his Ultra, the grin on his face and hit boots in my victims chest, so good. As you can see in the below video, Bison is going to stay my main again.

I'm looking forward to any additional changes they do make to Bison in the final version, though if I can hit this Ultra similar to the way I hit El Fuerte's on jump ins this my be enough to get me out of all of the corner traps I always seem to end up in.

Two new trailers were released today by Capcom

First up is the 3rd promotional trailer. Not quite as forth coming with new info as the last couple of trailers but it still has some really awesome animated scenes that will get your heart pumping. Sweet Scene of Cody coming through the wall too. Screw the Rules indeed.
The next one is the new animation that will be packaged with special edition of SSF4. Looks much better than the movie packaged with SF4 SE. Story is based around Juli and how she became the person she is. The Alpha Dolls as well as Cammy, Guile and Chun Li make appearances also.

Super Street Fighter 4 pre-release Impressions - Blanka

Posted by Blues Friday, January 22, 2010

Blanka like most returning characters does not seem to have that many changes. His normals and specials are largely the same, their have been reports of his crouching fierce punch being closer to his SF2 version, his vertical Blanka Ball flying closer to the ground and his electricity apparently activates on 4 inputs instead of 5 now, overall not too much of a change to most seasoned Blanka players though the crouching fierce punch might be a good poke depending on how quick it is now.

His New Ultra, Shout of Earth, actually has two variations one ground and one anti-air and both look awesome. The move is activated similar to Guile's Flash Kick and you can change which version of it you want to use by the buttons you are going to press, so people will see you charging it up. One of Capcom's SF4 advisers Seth Killian mentioned that the ground version of the move could be used to hit projectile throwing characters out of their move if you have good reactions and while projectile throwing characters were never a problem for Blanka thanks to his EX Blanka Ball it will also hit them at full screen which the EX ball rarely could hit so Shout of Earth will definitely make your opponent bring the fight to you. The anti-air version of the move seems to activate very quickly so this may help with cross-ups, but again nobody in their right mind crosses up blanka as his electricity and some of his balls give him every opportunity to counter.

At the moment I'm not really sure how this new Ultra will help Blanka's game, it seems to have more practical uses than the original Ultra but it also seems to have a lot of uses that were never Blanka's weaknesses. Many people also like the 50/50 ultra on a fallen opponent, whether this move has enough advantages to give this up has yet to be seen.

Super Street Fighter 4 pre-release Impressions - T. Hawk

Posted by Blues Wednesday, January 20, 2010

T. Hawk is back and has made the transition across to SSF4 very similar to Dee Jay. Everything that he had before is back with a couple of extra's. The first thing that you'll notice about T. Hawk is his huge stature, the man is easily the biggest character in the game. His moves all return just as you remember them as well as a new move the Condor Spire. The Condor Spire is a cross between his Condor Dive and Rising Condor, he starts with a quick hop into the air and then dives horizontally. It has ok start up and you are able to combo into it off of some moves, it is also good to use to tick throws if it's blocked.

His first Ultra is the Raging Typhoon which is an updated version of his original super move as you can see below it's quite devastating. It has huge range right now, but this will be toned down in the final version of the game. Not really a fan of the whole American Indian part at the end but the damage is quite impressive.

His Second Ultra, Raging Slash, is one of my favourites as it hits hard, hits fast and is absolutely brutal. It is an anti-air move which starts off similar to his Rising Condor move and ends with T. Hawk slamming the crap out of his victim. It has invincibility on start up and has great aerial range too because of his huge size.

T. Hawk is a power house and from play tests reports he should be getting toned down a bit, however he seems to have the tools right now to dominate the competition.

Super Street Fighter 4 pre-release Impressions - Chun Li

Posted by Blues Sunday, January 17, 2010

Chun Li's Second Ultra is the Kikosho. It's been a series staple since the original alpha and we all expected this Ultra to make a comeback and it's great. Best of all it's not a charge move and it hits off some of her specials and unlike her original ultra it does not require you to be in the corner or have amazing timing. The move is near identical to her Third Strike version, she puts her hands behind her back to charge it up and then a huge ball of energy engulfs everything in its path. It does not come out fast enough to be used as an anti air so she still doesn't have an effective anti-air for jump ins unless you can get it off really early on their jump. On block the move does push back the opponent but not far enough to be safe for any character with a good mid range attack.

Her normals like most characters are the same though her big standing kick is nowhere near as fast as it used to be. I did not notice this but I've heard that the the spinning bird kick now knocks back more and her EX lighting legs apparently hit more depending on how many kicks you press. This means that when you combo into an either Ultra it will most likely do less damage than in SF4. While we are on the topic, her new ultra off of them is easy as pie, anything that can combo into the ex lighting legs can now lead to the Ultra.

Unlike the characters I have written about so far, I can instantly see reasons to counter pick your ultra against certain characters and I look forward to seeing some of her SF4 bad match ups with her new move.

Super Street Fighter 4 pre-release Impressions - Sagat

Posted by Blues Saturday, January 16, 2010

First up Sagat takes more damage now, I heard that it's the same as Ryu's now so it's not that big an issue, on the plus side it just means you get your ultra quicker. While we are talking about his Ultra, Sagat's fireball super from the Alpha series, the Tiger Cannon, is back as his second Ultra. The charging of the fireball animation is exactly what you'd expect from a a fireball ultra, with Sagat drawing his hands together at chest hight and throwing it out. Honestly I'm a little disappointed with the Tiger Cannon as it does very little to change his core fight style. The move hits off of anything the Tiger Destruction (TD) did only it does a lot less damage, even in the corner where his 1st ultra rarely hits for full damage it still does less damage (this is still the same so far in SSF4). While the game is still unfinished, from what I've seen his new ultra does not even fully hit on a juggled opponent, which makes me wonder what practical use it's going to receive as I can not see the pros in using it out side of a slightly stronger fireball game (which he doesn't need anyway).

His Normals are nearly all the same, he has a new animation on his lk which also hits twice when close. His combos that worked in SF4 still work now so double --> RH into his ultra still hits for just as much damage as before. His Tiger Uppercut however has had its damage tweaked a bit as it now hits for slightly less damage, not that using this uppercut was ever central to his play style so this shouldn't affect Sagat players too much. Now to slightly......make up for this he has his Tiger Charge back from the alpha series. In case you never saw this move (like me) what it does is power ups his next Tiger move. He never had much use for it in the alpha series, probably wont have much use now, though I just heard that apparently the move now takes 1 EX bar away and also acts as a dodge like move, sounds interesting now.

Overall Sagat seems like his core game play won't change too much, he's just as strong as ever, though I look forward to seeing what his new moves bring to the table.

Super Street Fighter 4 pre-release Impressions - Dee Jay

Posted by Blues Friday, January 15, 2010

Very fun to play. All the moves from SSF2T I remember are present, whether he will be as dominating as he was then is still unknown. Most tactics from the past can still be used, the slide is still an awesome anti air but now is nowhere near as good for closing the gaps as it is easily punishable when it whiffs or is blocked. His 1st Ultra - Sobat Festival can go through fireballs at close range, and looks fantastic too with him landing multiple dread kicks and ending with a huge Max Out like Uppercut.

Climax Beat is Ultra number 2, it starts with his machine-gun upper special move into an uppercut which launches you into the air, Dee Jay then proceeds to punches the crap out of you juggling you are in the air and ends it with a sweet looking hook to the body which sends you flying, total hit 44!

His EX-dread kick has lost the crumple earlier versions of SSF4 had but it still seems to be easily combo-able and has invincibility on start up which flys right through fireballs and most normals. Max Out is as good as I remember it being with the EX version throwing 2 in quick succession which makes it great for those who like to jump over fireballs. I did not see many people using the machine gun upper however the EX version does launch your opponent into a juggle state which can be comboed into the ultra. The Jackknife Maximum (the up kicks) are back and seems to serve their purpose, I still wouldn't use them on wake up though.

Dee Jay's normals seemed really good with some quick pokes such as his light punches which seemed reminded me of Balrog with the way they could be easily comboed. From what I've seen of Dee Jay so far he will be a contender.

Not much has changed with Ryu in SSF4, his strong and fierce Dragon Punch's now hit twice, so hitting jump ins now dishes out a little less damage than before, that includes trading hits and following it up with the ultra so don't expect it to affect his game play at all. Saw a few people empty jumping in and just throwing it out catching FA happy people out not expecting the two hits. The rest of his specials and normals seemed identical to SF4. , he is just as strong as ever.

His new Ultra is the Metsu Shoryuken and it looks awesome, very similar to Ryu's super is SFIII, though this one pops them up into the air at the end while Ryu falls instead of going all the way up similar to Gouken's. Landing it off of a FADC'ed Shoryuken is easy as cake though it does not go through the entire animation it goes through with multiple hits for a lot less damage, very similar again to SFIII. I saw many jumpins get hit with it but again multiple hits for average damage, I did not see anyone hitting the ultra on a deep jump so I am not sure if it will give out 100% damage like Gouken's. While the damage is amazing especially off of a FA I honestly do not see it being as viable as Ryu's fireball ultra which to me is still the easiest Ultra to hit off oh nearly anything.

I'm loving the look of the new ultra, it looks amazing though as above at this stage not sure why anyone would pick it over his fireball, but time will tell what uses it's going to have, I can't wait for the likes of Daigo or Alex Valle to show us.

Super Street Fighter 4 pre-release Impressions

What do you get when you cross a bootleg copy of Street Fighter 2 (SF2)on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and the 2d fighting engine known as Mugen? A really bad looking street fighter game that plays like a brand new fighting game. Their have been a couple of releases so far, the version currently available (1.0) contains the below characters each with the moves you know as well as some you don't. (check out Chun Li's new move set for a couple of surprises). You have your special moves, super moves, ex moves, huge double figure juggle combos it's all here.

RyuZangiefSheng Long
Chun LiDhalsimAkuma
BlankaBalrogHaggar
GuileVegaDan
KenSagatSean
HondaM. BisonTerry Bogard

My Quick 19 Cents

The characters are well represented with the entire SF2 cast here as well as a handful of extras who go a long way to keeping things interesting, though I have to admit Terry does feel a bit out of place I hope the developers of this game do not continue this trend of adding non street fighter characters.

The graphic style is pretty consistent with the blue shadows on the super moves really being the only thing that stand out as they do not fit the mishmashed 8Bit style everything else is presented in.

The sound is handled well with the 8 bit music sounding as you would expect with most themes being instantly recognisable to fighting game fans. The sound effects are the same as you would hear in the more recent games so expect all the hard hitting punches and kicks as well as all of the sonic booms and tiger uppercuts you are used to.

The game play really depends on how you play, it is very easy to exploit the current system with infinites and huge looping combos available to most characters. So if you are playing for real with friends it can be a frustrating experience, however if you are playing for fun it can be very enjoyable. The amount of health given to each character is huge so it is possible to run down the clock quite easily if you are playing the keep away game. Playing against the computer is fun to get the basics down and the AI does put a little bit of a fight but expect to get bored of this very quickly.

Future versions promise the four new challengers that were introduced in Super SF2 as well as some of the characters introduced in SF Alpha 2 NES another bootleg with a similar art style. I'd like them to continue this trend of adding extra characters beyond these with Cody from final fight being my first choice as he would be a great addition to join Haggar and Guy.

Overall I definitely recommend this game to any street fighter fan as it is both fun and unlike 99% of Mugen games, consistent with its play style. Just don't go into it looking for a tournament level fighter with perfect balancing as you won't find it here.

Card Sagas Wars

This amazing looking little fan made dream cross over fighting game created using the 2D fighting engine Mugen that seems to be taking a page out of Super Smash Bros (SSB) play book. Just like SSB this game contains characters from multiple franchises and from multiple developers. You'll find the big names like Mario, Link, Cloud, Samus, and Master Chief and stars from lesser known but equally popular titles amongst the hard core crowds with Soma (Castlevania), Etna (Disgaea), Crono (Chrono Trigger), X (Megaman X) and even Chun Li of Street Fighter fame makes an appearance. Current Plans are to have 36 playable characters and just like SSB it also contains nearly a hundred cameo characters who are not selectable however will be used as support characters.

If it plays as good as it looks and sounds this is going to be every hardcore gamers wet dream, no release date for now but check out the video below and visit the Card Gallery for more information.
